Hi there guys, I'm a medical student (who's almost finished!) and I thought I'd shed some light on this acne issue. Having finished my dermatology rotation, I thought I'd clarify what is fact and fiction and what you can do to try and help your acne.

Myths
* A bad diet give you acne
* More/less sex/masturbation etc gives you acne

Acne is inflammation of the oil (sebaceous) glands of the skin. Bacteria on the skin are essentially involved in the process that produces pimples.

SPAM
It is helpful to try and grade your acne from mild, moderate to severe. Mild acne can usually be successfully treated by over the counter medications. For moderate to severe, you should see your doctor for medication that can quite successfully treat it.

For Mild
* By a cream containing a substance called benzoyl peroxide. This is the active ingredient in proactive, which you can buy from your pharmacy for less than a quarter of the price! If you're in america, I don't know what are some of the commercial names but in Australia and NZ there's a good one called "Benzac". There is a 5% and 10% strength. The one in proactiv is 2.5% Beware that it will dry out your face, and you may notice some dryness or even skin peeling, but that's the way it's meant to work and that will resolve in 2-3 weeks (so be patient!)
*Use a salicyclic acid wash morning and night. I think neutrogena makes one. Be careful with towels and clothes as it can bleach them (using them in the shower might be easier)

Other advice
* Avoid creams/cosmetics and moisturisers!
* Mild sunlight might be helpful
* Realise that there is a more effective and cheaper option than proactive
* See a doctor if the above doesn't help or if your acne is more severe. In general, you'd be looking at 3-6 months of antibiotics

Hope that helps. A good site to look up info is at dermentnz and look at the information for patients section

Go to a sauna on a regular basis and sweat it out.

The heat will open up your pores, and your sweat will be able to get rid of the gunk stuck in your face.

Please keep yourself hydrated.

Speaking from experience, but substitute sauna with hot yoga.

I know it sounds stupid....but quit masturbating. Me and two of my friends had a $200 bet once for who could go the longest without busting a nut. Even with girls. We have extreme trust with eachother so we were truthful. Anyway we all noticed a few changes when you go a while without busting one. One of the things we all noticed was that our skin was clearing up. It really works. So I dont spank it anymore and I never even wash my face with soap. I just rub it with water in the shower every once in a while. people...even girls always compliment me on my skin. My friends both have great skin now to. We have tested it a couple times to see if its true. Everytime I spank it a pimple or two show up. I did some research and I guess your hormones balance out when you abstain. When you spank it all the time then your hormone balance gets outta whack. try it out.....p.s. I didn't win the $200 dollars. Coffee shop girl made me lose.

I have had moderate acne since around 16, i'm 21 now and am pretty much clear. The best thing I found was any cream with benzoyl peroxide. After trying just about every over the counter SPAM, different diets etc. I was searching the net and found the site acne dot org which recommends the cream. I have been using this for the last year or so and it is not a miracle cure but definately helps keep the spots under control. Also, having a decent diet (not too much dairy and processed foods) and regular sleep pattern helps, as well as sunshine and seawater if possible, depending on where you live.

Dream_ wrote a great reply!
Most people buy every bottle of SPAM and every cream available... without realizing that the issue is not on the surface but rather inside.

Unbalanced diet, hormones and malfunctioning organs are the ones that cause acne.
Eat better, exercise more, drinks lots of water (2-4 liters a day), give up the fast food and wash your face with water at least a few times a day... if possible do a colon cleanse - this will get rid of toxins.

If all of the above is done properly - you shouldn't have any acne problems.

Hi guys, I used to have pretty bad acne only a few years ago. It became a really dominating thread in my life, no one thing fixed it, so I had to work on the whole package. This is how I worked through it...

Diet: This is really important, but not the only reason for acne. If you have genetics and other factors that contribute to acne, what you put in your body is what will come out of your skin.
- Foods and drink high in sugar, saturated fat or salt are not good for your body.
- Drink more water!!! this flushes your kidneys, helps maintain good ph in your body.
- Eat healthy natural foods. the least amount of human intervention the better fresh produce, fish, whole-grains and lean meats.

Physical management: What physical changes you can make to improve your situation.
- Good Hygene! wash your face and your hands regularly.
- Dont touch your face all the time. you will increase scarring when you pick at your face. Also your fingers carry bacteria which you put into your skin when you touch/pick. work on it.

Emotional and metaphysical management: This is an area no doctor or specialist will talk to you about. This side of things carries no medical research I am aware of... It worked for me, it may work for you.
- Your skin is the largest organ for excreating waste. metaphysically your skin is what you show to the outside world and what you have going on with your emotions (inside) will come out on your skin (outside).
- Anger. Metaphysically pimples and acne are physical manifestations of anger and rage. Do you have anger outbursts preceeding an outbreak? This was very true for me. I could be eating just about anything, but my emotions were he biggest trigger for me. Your emotions can trigger hormonal reactions that trigger outbreaks.
- Are you happy and confident in your skin/body. If you have internal issues around self-esteem and self-respect, your body can mirror what is going on in the inside(emotions), on the outside (skin). This can be especially true if you dont have a good emotional release. Get involved in martial arts or physical exercise as physical release.
- Consider seeing a councellor or a psycologist about the emotional aspects of the outbreak... your mind is such an amazing powerful thing, it can have a huge impact on your skin.

Medical management: Go see a doctor or skin speciallist for ongoing skin problems. There are so many SPAM available and you need to find what is most applicable to your condition (dry skin, greasy, blocked pores, pores too open gathering bacteria, liver problems etc.)

This is just scratching the surface. There may be any number of different reasons why you are going through this skin condition, be prepared o address all the reasons.

Please feel free to PM me if you'd like more info on what worked for me.

put a clean towel over your pillow to sleep on every night. I did it and it significantly cut down on my acne. I also started working out and putting less crap on my face. Actually one of the first things my brother suggested was to stop using facial cleaners. I did and it started to go away. try this things for a few weeks or go see a dermatoligist.

1. Wash your face with oil-free face wash.

2. use JUST ENOUGH moisturizer or SPAM cream. too much will clog the pores.

3. apply spot SPAM where there's a spot

4. get in the habit of doing this morning and night

It's already been mentioned in here but I just want to stress it more. I strongly recommend going to Acne.org

For years I used to get huge whiteheads and dark red pimples that would each stay on my face for weeks. I talked to my doctor about it multiple times and tried almost every prescription and over the counter remedy out there (except Acutane, which is known to cause extremely dry skin and chapped lips). Nothing seemed to be effective.

What I finally discovered was that there wasn't any one thing that could magically cure the problem, but it was all about making lifestyle changes. Acne.org has a quiz that you can take that will give you all kinds of suggestions to get you started. Some of the things I did that seemed to be the most effective were quitting smoking, changing my pillow cases every few nights, drinking more water, switching to organic dairy (no added hormones), getting more exercise and staying on top of my school work to minimize my stress.

Processed foods are the worst you can have. Have a diet mostly in fresh fruits and veggies, preferably organic, and no grains, dairy, breads, and gluten. I don't suggest eating meat, but if you do, you do lol. Don't consume oxidized or cooked fats and do not worry about your protein intake if you eat mostly fruits and veggies. I eat a raw vegan diet and get stronger and build muscle. There is enough protein in what nature gave us. Don't bother with supplements, just eat natural foods that are ready to eat for you. There is enough amino acids in fruits and veggies anyway so its all good for you. If you do decide to go with supplements, go with a natural whey protein that uses stevia instead of artifical flavors and aspartame or sucralose. Aspartame and sucralose are neurtoixins and can be carcinogenic. So, stick to natural whole foods and it will go away for sure.
Ok let me make one thing clear. This is all bullshit.I'm sorry , but it is.
Trust me i've seen everything.Cremes , diets all that.
I bought every creme out there , all that and 6 months ago I started seeing a dermatologist she prescripted me soap and I'm so clear right now you wouldn't even believe me.

Here's my advice:
- Wash your face with sebamed look around on ebay for it.It's the best soap out there.
- See a dermatologist.

Don't stay away from chocolate or whatever 'cuz that's all plain bullshit.

Well in the years spent trying to figure out how to clean up my acne, I'm finally getting somewhere. Here's my personal experience with dealing with acne:

Had bad acne. Tried all the creams and products, nothing worked. Guess it just works for mild acne.

Tried Accutane. Dramatically helped, but it's one screwed up thing to put in your body. I got weird side-effects.

Acne started popping again couple of months later, but not as much. Still annoying though. I tried to get a tan during winter and get out as much as possible during summer. Helped a lot, but there were still annoying pimples on the lower parts of my face, and a bit on my forehead from time to time.

Stopped drinking coffee, replaced it with tea and started drinking lots of water every day. Now it's really getting somewhere, I rarely have pimples coming out.

I'd say exercise, go out, quit coffee and coca-cola, drink water and I guess lower your stress? Also, if you're going to stay in your room for a long period of time, at least keep the windows and door opened to let fresh air in.
