Well, you know her likes and dislikes, so don't just get a generic gift. Get something related to her favorite tv show, or clothing brand, or food. It'll show that you pay attention to what she specifically likes.

I never spent more than $15. If there are special occasions I rather cook her some nice dinner, set a movie in my condo and fuck her like she was never fucked before.

Also, I would consider expensive gifts if we're married.

Bday gifts I'd create something more sentimental, a moment if you will such as a short excursion out of town, a picnic in a private area with a gorgeous backdrop, high tea, something where its more about the connection than about a gift per se.
