The problem with the opener is that it lacks a root. Why are you asking?
Monkey: Hey guys, need a quick female opinion on something. Is it alright to take someone's number if you already have a boyfriend?
HB: Yes/No.
Monkey: The reason I ask is, I've got a friend who was recently out of town, and while he was at the bar, a couple of girls offered him their phone numbers. When he got back to Edmonton, his girlfriend found the numbers in his coat pocket, and automatically jumped to the conclusion he was cheating on her. Is she over-reacting, or is her reaction justified?
Option One
HB: Over-reacting.
Monkey: That's sort of what I thought. So if you were out with a guy and he was taking a bunch of numbers from pretty girls, where would you draw the line?
Option Two
HB: Justified.
Monkey: So it's not ok to make new friends at the bar? What if he never uses the number?
Totally agree with monkey. You have too root your opener, why do you ask for their opinion?
If you don't root the opener they will know that you have an agenda which is bad of course.
I will also add that don't ask if you can ask. Don't start opening by saying "Can I ask you...." or "so can I grab.." bla bla. If you ask them if you can ask them a question it seems like you're insecure and therefore conveying DLV.
