Hey guys

I've been told by my friends, guys and girls that i have a monotone voice and dont use much if any expression. Everytime i use expression they tease me and say wow he used some expression. lol

Anyway I really want to work on enhancing my voice to full potential, I have a deep voice so i want to be able to use it in my game.

If anyone has any voice exercises that could help it would be great or any other advice.

cheers,

Cane

I too have a deep and somewhat monotone voice. It wasn't until I got experience with sales that I became conscious of this and started to change it. A great tool you can use is a tape recorder. Practice different openers, routines, or whatever you like. Play it back, and see where you can improve. Remember your verbal pace, inflection, volume, and....pauses can all help you get your point across more clearly.

good question.

What I started doing to solve this problem was:

PRACTICING AROUND FRIENDS/FAMILY
- you hang out with these guys so you would be more comfortable
- no matter how much your voice cracks, they wouldn't give a damn
- they will give you feed back even if you don't ask for it wether it is verbal or non-verbal (pay attention to body language and facial expressions)
- the more you do it, you'll make it a habit.

SINGING IN THE SHOWER/CAR
- no one is around, so step out of your voice boundaries for a minute
- get loose with it. see how crazy you can get with your voice
- if girls see you singing in the car, they'll think its cute funny.

READING A BOOK TO A KID
- brother, sister, cousin, friend's brother/sister/cousin whoever. Choose words in the story to EMPHASIZE and get the kid EXCITED to listen to you.
(ex. so the big bad wolf, BLEW the little house DOWN!!!)
- if your kid is into the story, you must be doing something right. monotone stories usually bore the kid.

NOW!, go practice and make yourself proud!

Practice talking while motioning with your hands. You match your inflection with the height of your hands, so when you raise your hands up, your pitch goes higher, when you lower your hands down, you lower your pitch and make your voice deeper. This is incredibly effective in combination with good story telling gesturing (basically you show the story with your hands instead of just waiving them around, you use your hands to act out the story).

my voice got deep when i was like 12(super early puberrty : \ lol) and at the time i was a shy kid so i spoke monotamic. what helped me was what was mention above reading to kids. my brother was four so I'd read him stories.
Second thing that helped was when i was 14. I started listening to more music and would recite lyrics that i liked. Age 15- I got into hip hop alor of lil wayne, who offers great punchline and quotes in his lyrics, I'd recite thos with the same charisma he did. And now present day prob turned 16 as your read this i still do the lil wayne thing..boosts confidence and its just fun

The best singers, rappers, storytellers and speakers speak DYNAMICALLY, varying their amplification and tone. Also, when storytelling sometimes I just stay silent for 2-3 seconds look round at everyone, then continue with the story, to break it up a bit, it may engage them more also, purely because your "storytelling" has been given greater variety with a small moment if silence, works better with a dramatic story.

I have the same problem except I have a high voice =/ and im 21 so its not getting any deeper. I think I started speaking in monotone because it helps it sound deeper, but my best friend said when I get excitied and stuff it gets higher or whatever.

Yeah, communication classes will help allot to an extent, but they are pretty expensive.
I dont have anybody to read a book to so whenever im reading, or about to go out, i pull out a book and just read it outloud, excinuating certain words = make it exciting!
It also helps with articullation which i have a problem with. Very Happy
