Long story short: I have recently left my "high-flying" job (still broke as one always lives outside their means) and am strongly considering going to university. I lacked the focus at 18, but feel that I have it now (I'm 22).

I am torn between a few options; business/computer science/economics

My question is - many universities run joint honors programmmes and sociology/social psychology is a popular choice.

What do you guys think of this? Obviously sociology has its uses real world, and it would be sweet to be able to call sarging revision, for example:

Quote:

Level 2 options include Beliefs and Society; Social Psychology of Individual & Group Processes; Sociology on the Menu: food and society; Psychoanalysis and the Sociology of Racism and the Social Construction of Sexuality.

I generally find myself decisive, but I am interested to get your opinion on this.

I'm attending college now and have been leaning towards sociology as a major with a minor in social psych. I think it will help with PUA as well as it feeds my love for understanding people and why they do things.

I took a sociology class last semester. I really enjoyed it. So I decided to take another one this semester. So I'm with you on this one.

i think it would be very beneficial for you to look into it... i cant say i have studied it at a university, never the less i have been studying it... and once u understand the "common" social dynamics, it is easy to fuck around with it and play with it... for example; ever wonder why people you kinda know ask "how are you" and "what have you been up to" when they see you... do they really give a fuck? no they are just being polite...

so give urself some exercises to warp the common social dynamic... what i like to do which gives me practise and a laugh is go to stores and when sales people ask how are you? i say "do you really care" its so funny to see what reactions u get out of em.. but be careful... only say it in a playful manner... or if they say "can i help you" i say random stuff like "are you an orthopedic surgeon?" or anything really i mix it up to see what does and doesnt work...

in conclusion if u can understand how the general public act around each other... you can make yourself stand out from the crowd

doesn't it depend on what your ambition is in life? what do you want to be? I mean personaly i am just going to college having done sociology in gcse and i think it is a great subject. it gets you thinking about your surroundings and as an advantage you will always have something to talk about with women. on the other hand i will be doing economics and math in college along wid philosophy and politics but thats irelevant here. (note philosophy is more useful to have somethig to talk about than sociology)

anyway my main point is that you can do sociology if you are interested in the enviroment people live in today and are the kind of person who has good memory because you nd to remember loads of theorys and sociologists and logics and so on

Honestly? Not really. My ambition is to be the best me. Career wise I'm not going to jump through hoops to make somebody else rich, so I want to study something that is going to help ME most long term.

Unless you want a highly specialised career (doctor, engineer, ect) WHAT degree you have have little bearing on your prospects. It shows your ability to analyse and regurgetate. I recently moved from a good financial firm that almost soley recruits graduates - there were people with degrees varying from music to sport, and I'm talking a lot of people with largely irrelevant degrees.

Also bare in mind the more you specialise (yes you may get promotions ect), the more you limit your options further down the line. People skills are universal.

I think all of the liberal arts majors (sociology, psychology, history, political science, etc.) all give good insight into why we do the things we do. And you can use any major to your advantage really.

you are obviously against the system of capitalism where the ploretearian(working class) has to work for the borgouise only to see the bourgoise middle-upper) get all the profit. A marxist in a sence. there is no wrong and right answer in this and I have to admit that your right i sayin the more you specialise in something the more you are stricting yourself. but then again isnt your identity your qualification and your career. thats why when you ask people "what are you?" they are most likely to tell you their profesion. hey am just a 16 yr old boy so you may know a lot more than me.

but as for improving your skill with conversating with women girls in my case i think it is better to face your "approach Anxiety" if you have one and talk to as much hot babes as you can. because the subject your taking wont matter unless you face you axiety. only assuming you may have one. no offence intended

We could go in depth about the education system and its flaws. It's hypocritical and too negative to worry about. My drive is wealth and this is not gained in the rat race.

You're correct in that most people will state their profession if asked who they are. This doesn't make it true, though. You are what you believe. An accountant believes he's an accountant; that it is his identity. I don't believe that. I want my reality to be much more layered than this - I will be many things.

To put it simply, if I paint for a living to support my family, am I an artist, or a father, or a husband? To give you another example, do you know McDonalds own more real estate than the Catholic Church? It's as important to them as selling burgers.

The course itself isn't intended to replace any in-field work. It will merely supplicate my experience and help me to better understand people. This has wider effects than pick-up, but I like that it will help this area of my life also.

Also, mate, don't describe yourself as just anything. You make a good argument and it's not wrong inherently. I also appreciate you taking the time to respond with your thoughts. The problem is, school is designed to breed employees almost entirely (exceptions around the MBA level). Employees work, pay taxes and live in a comfort zone chasing pay rises, only to increase their spending and pay more taxes. I simply want those employees working for me - they're a taxable deduction!

Infamous, I do agree with you. The stability of a steady job isn't much more than that. How often do people with one steady "job" become enormously wealthy? Not very often..

It's all about diversity, and originality if you'd ask me.
